This was my second Ray Harryhausen movie, after that bizarre moon one where aliens show up in the last half and really turn things around. This one is different in that I had actually heard of and knew roughly what it was going to be about. I also enjoyed this one a great deal more, but it could be because of this huge stop motion, monsters fighting phase I seem to be in at the moment. Or perhaps it just kicked ass.
The story is basically about the discovery of a monster who starts out really small and grows exponentially bigger over night. Of course he is viewed as a threat so they start attacking him but he just fucks everybody up....including an elephant, but we'll get to that a little later on.
The creature itself is pretty awesome, both in design and execution. I've already made clear that I'm a huge sucker for well-done stop-motion animation and this is some of the best, at least of that era. It's just fun to watch the thing move around and interact with people. Sure the effects are primitive looking now, but that's all part of the charm.
The highlight is definitely when the creature dukes it out with a stop-motion elephant. This has to be one of the best things I've ever seen in any movie. How often do you get to see anything fight an elephant, let alone a space monster?! I won't tell you who wins here because you should be forced to go and actually watch the movie. Needless to say they each put up one helluva good fight. I hope Rocky fights an elephant one day.
If you love stop-motion animated 50's science-fiction movie and dashes, (and who doesn't), then you will eat this shit up. I had a lot of fun watching it, even if the beginning did move a little slow, something I maybe should have mentioned in the bulk of the review but fuck off.
7.5/10
