It's weird saying that a movie where a giant butterfly who is summoned by two tiny girls on a bizarre magic island has to do battle with a giant dinosaur thing who is attacking Japan isn't as ridiculous as I wanted it to be. But it really wasn't. The whole thing was played very serious and very straight, which you would think would make it that much more crazy and silly. I don't know, I can't even really explain it well. Bottom line is, I really wish this movie had just been well, stupider I guess.
It's still a pretty entertaining watch. I guess this one is highly regarded as one of the best in the Godzilla series. I'm guessing it's because of my complaints from the last paragraph, that it isn't that stupid. It tells a story, contains pretty good performances, and overall feels like a movie. It reminds me of Gojira in that sense.
The fight between Mothra and Godzilla is short and strange, but pretty badass. Two slugs do a lot of the fighting near the end though, which is kind of boring since all they can really do is shoot this webbing stuff from their mouths. They kind of look like Graboids though, and I always welcome Graboids in just about every movie I watch.
There is also this strange musical number that occurs whenever the two tiny women have to awaken Mothra to get him (her?) to come and fight. It goes on for waaaaay longer than it needs to and if memory serves me correctly, happens twice in the movie.
This is a pretty decent watch that is a much better made movie than the last few Godzilla's have been. I should maybe watch it again knowing that it's not one of the stupider ones.
7/10
