Under the Hood

I guess I probably should have put this and Black Freighter together in the same review but it's WAY too late for that now isn't it?!

Under the Hood is the other feature on the DVD and is essentially a look back at the original Minutemen. It takes a lot more material from the book and presents it as a TV program where the host shows interviews conducted with several members of the original group. While a lot of this is material taken straight out of the book, as with Black Freighter there is also a lot of new material here as well. This helps to keep things interesting and overall I actually found this to be the more interesting out of the two short films.

It's very cool to see some of the cast members from the movie reprising their roles here. I especially liked seeing more of Carla Gugino since I felt she could have used more screen time in the actual film. Of all the main characters she has the most to do here, with the others only offering a brief appearances, if even that. It's still neat to see them expanding on their roles however, and since I would imagine a lot of their dialogue during the interview segments is improvised, they deserve even more credit.

I'm not sure if people who aren't familiar with the Watchmen world would get as much out of this feature as it is generally a giant easter egg for the fans. I highly enjoyed it, but don't think it's something I would return to for repeat viewings. It's definitely worth checking out if you're a fan and want to see some more Watchmen. They did a really good job with this and again I have to applaud the effort that went into this when they easily could have just half assed it.

7/10
