Leprechaun

Up until this point I have done my best to avoid this series. Usually in a long-running horror series, no matter how bad the sequels eventually got, the first movie is almost always considered a good movie. Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Friday the 13th, all series that have had tons of sequels, but have a first movie that is considered at least solid. Leprechaun is known for being shitty from the very beginning. However the time had finally come to maybe not watch the entire series, but at least see where it all began. Sadly, it has that terrible reputation for a reason.

The only thing worth noting about this movie is that it's the first starring role of Jennifer Aniston. She does ok, definitely better than the other human character performers. Her character is pretty annoying, but I guess it's neat to see where she started off. Then again, I don't really like Jennifer Aniston, so maybe it's not that neat at all.

The leprechaun himself is more annoying than anything. He has terrible one-liners, pretty lame deaths, and I'm not sure but it sounded like his Irish accent just came and went throughout the movie. One of his first kills is death by pogo stick. Sounds like it could be funny right? No, not really, and it's not. Plus the death doesn't make sense since it shows the guy's face all bloody even though the pogo stick never comes near it. Leprechaun also spends a good chunk of the movie driving around in a little car or on roller skates. The film footage is sped up for these parts and the result is just well, stupid. Overall Leprechaun is a weak, WEAK horror movie villain and makes even Freddy in his later days seem dark and serious.

The movie tries to be a horror comedy but fails spectacularly with both genres. It's never close to being scary, and any and all attempts at humour fall completely flat. Plus the last half hour of the movie is just boring. The movie isn't a complete failure in that you're in such disbelief over what you're seeing that you just have to keep watching. I really can't believe this movie spawned a whole series. I won't be surprised if I check out another one just to see where the fuck they took things from here. I'd like to say it can't get worse, but lord knows that it certainly can.

4/10
